HEIC thumbnails in GNOME Files on Pop OS

2024-08-26

I wanted to skim through some files from my iPhone, synced with Synology Drive to my PC, but all the HEIC files had no thumbnail - not particularly helpful when looking for specific pictures. I found this for Fedora. A quick apt search later - the solution for Pop OS (and I assume Ubuntu etc.) is sudo apt install heif-thumbnailer.

You don't even need to re-open GNOME Files after installing it - I just got the previews as soon as I alt-tabbed back to the Files window.
